Pete Shenton and Tom Roden, Co-Artistic Directors of New Art Club
December 2010
|
In a nutshell, what you are all about?
|
|
We are an absurd blend of comedy, dance and experimental theatre which may sound rather weird but is actually pretty good. Big Bag of Boom was described in Three Weeks as ‘explosively funny... an anarchic admixture of the surreal, the silly and the subversive’, which sums it up pretty well. |
| |
|
What inspires you?
|
|
We are inspired by absolutely anything, but mainly: the names of hair
salons; listening to music; standing in the rain waiting for a bus;
stand up comedy; the smell of freshly cut grass on Wednesdays; other
artists and each other. |
| |
|
What can we expect from Big Bag of Boom?
|
|
You can expect an hour of award winning hilarity from the funniest conceptual dancers in the world! According to the Big Issue you should ‘prepare for your expectations to be exceeded’.
Though, to be honest, we think this reviewer thought we were going to
be rubbish. We'd say you should prepare for your expectations to be
either met or confounded depending on what your expectations are.

|
What comes next?
|
|
In the future we hope to continue to delve into the wonderful world of
dance and comedy; creating new forms and exploring ideas. We also hope
to become posthumously famous by having a cheese named after us, or a
pub, or a breed of dog, or anything really. |
New Art Club presented Big Bag of Boom as part of IpArt at the Jerwood DanceHouse in July 2011.
Biography
New Art Club is Tom Roden and Pete Shenton. They started working
together in 1995, formed the company in 2001 and have since produced a
wealth of characteristically clever and funny dance shows. They have
toured nationally and internationally and won many awards. The
Short
Still Show reached the final of The Place Prize for choreography in
2004.
New Art Club’s breakthrough show was the hilarious spoof on contemporary
dance,
This Is Modern, which went down a storm with audiences and
critics and has been touring solidly since its creation in 2003.
