Cameron McMillan, Associate Artist of DanceEast
September 2011

Tell us about yourself. Who/what has been your inspiration? |
|
‘I am inspired by many things, but if there is a single inspiration it
has to be music, not necessarily always for my work (although it always
plays a key role) but for my desire to dance. Movement and dance is my
first and most natural response to music, and has been since I was
young.
I am inspired by the bravery of creativity, the honesty of invention,
the way we as people relate to each other and the world, and how we
express this. Oh, and the genius that is William Forsythe...’

What does it mean to you to be an Associate Artist of DanceEast? |
|
‘Having the support of DanceEast is giving me the courage and practical
support to move from dancer to choreographer. One of the most difficult
things as a choreographer can be having the infrastructure to get your
work made. Through this relationship I not only have a platform to make
and perform my work, but I am learning how to navigate a path from being
a performer, to having a creative voice in the industry.’ |

What can the audience expect from If Nobody Speaks...? |
|
‘If Nobody Speaks... is a DanceEast/ROH2 co-commission and the
performances at the DanceHouse will be its second outing, so it is still
very fresh! The duet is danced by me and the wonderful Lisa Welham, and it looks at the complexities of communication within a close
relationship.
Movement is a huge communicator and the work explores the things that
get, or don’t get said. It is set to three beautiful and poignant Bach
Violin Sonata adagios, which have been woven together with ‘found
sounds’ into an intimate sound score by composer Elspeth Brooke.’ |
|
After performing at the DanceHouse in October, what are your next steps? |
|
‘Well, the performer in me has not finished yet so I will be continuing
the balancing act of being a freelance dancer and choreographer. Coming
up I will be working with choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui on the new Anna Karenina film directed by Joe Wright. I will also be
choreographing a music video for singer/songwriter/performer Leigh De
Vries.’ |
