Soil Dances: A resource for Key Stage Two pupils
Soil Dances is a useful resource for schools in Suffolk, and is written by Elaine Elliott from All Saints CEVAP School, Laxfield. Based on a year on an arable farm, the ten themes of work have been designed for teachers, written with the National Curriculum guidelines in mind.
The pack contains the tools to build an effective and interesting dance class, including warm ups, observations points, extension ideas, cool downs and possible learning outcomes. It provides an ideal way for young people to examine and connect with their environment, and is especially applicable in rural areas.
Filming took place on farms and factories in Suffolk, including Muntons Malt and the Museum of East Anglian Life, both in Stowmarket. Working with Co-directors Michael Platt and Peter Anderson, 127 performers (consisting of school children and community groups) explore the heritage and agriculture of the Suffolk landscape.
[Soil Dances is] ‘a stunning work of art, reflecting all that is good in community dance and the filming of dance.’ Ann Ward, Laban Guild.
It is hoped that this pack will be used to inspire young people to create and experiment with dance, and explore the different landscapes and traditions that surround them.
