DanceEast Academy

When to attend Academy classes

Weekend sessions

These classes take place at the Jerwood DanceHouse, Ipswich, on Saturdays (junior level) and Sundays. The day begins with a warm-up and students are expected to cool down and stretch at the end of the day before making the journey home.

Mid-week training

Academy students train at least once during the week during term time. These classes form a core part of the scheme. Mid-week classes usually comprise of contemporary and ballet techniques, but other dance styles or disciplines may be introduced.

As students progress through the scheme the number of classes and length increases. As students get older they will have more strength to begin to prepare physically for auditions.

Mid-week classes take place in Ipswich, Cambridge and Norwich. Students are expected to attend their allocated classes apart from in exceptional circumstances. In some cases students may receive funding to take ballet classes in their local area during the week.

Easter and summer intensives

The performance element of Academy training commences with the Easter intensives. Students work in groups led by a tutor or guest choreographer to create pieces for performance. Students are involved in the creative process and should use these courses as learning opportunities. Choreographers are selected for their style and ability and because they bring a new set of skills to students.

Summer intensives round off the annual programme with learning new skills. They are primarily process focussed, meaning that there is not always a performance outcome, although they may end with an informal sharing.

National projects

On occasions the Academy may be invited to participate in National Dance CAT projects. These are usually offered to small groups or one class, depending on the nature of the project.

Previous opportunities have included:
  • Sound Moves Music and Dance Collaboration with Aldeburgh Young Musicians (2010).
  • Easter Residential at The Royal Ballet School (2009).
