DanceEast Academy

Training at the DanceEast Academy

The principle of Academy training is to tailor a programme that reflects the range and breadth of skills needed to go on to careers in the dance profession. The course is designed as an annual programme and all elements are compulsory.

Academy training is split into five broad areas:

  1. Technique
Core dance technique classes are in ballet and contemporary, which each include a variety of styles. When students start thinking about auditions for professional training, Individual Training Plans will aim to give some experience in the styles required for the auditions.
  2. Creativity and choreography
It is increasingly important for dancers to be able to create their own movement and for them to be comfortable, accomplished and confident in doing so. Students receive sessions in creative dance and choreography, and work regularly with professional choreographers to produce pieces for performance. Classes involve improvisation and contact improvisation, as well as learning how to create and manipulate movement material, leading to choreography skills.
  3. Health Education
These sessions include basic information about the body in relation to dance and how to look after the body. Classes also consist of floor barre work. Pilates mat work sessions are used throughout the course to give students core strength and control. Where requested, students should practice exercises shown to them at home between sessions.
  4. Performance
Throughout the course students may have the opportunity to take part in performances to support their training. This is used to teach elements of performance as well as to give a taste of the types of situations a professional performer may experience. Performances are used as 'works in progress' during the student's training, rather than a demonstration of their finished abilities.
  5. Enrichment activities
DanceEast is well connected with dance professionals and endeavours to offer opportunities for students to work with them where possible. It is hoped that these experiences will be inspiring and enjoyable. In addition, students may be invited to take part in one-off workshops or National Dance CAT projects. There are at least three theatre trips per year.
