Training & dance styles
Core dance technique classes are in ballet and contemporary dance, which each consist of a variety of styles. When students get to the stage of thinking about auditions for professional training, Individual Training Plans will aim to give some experience in the styles required for these auditions.
Ballet
Initially the basics of ballet training are the same for girls and boys. However, as students progress there will be increasing need for gender separate classes to allow for the different demands of male and female dancing and also to take into account growth.
Pointe
Ballet movements en Pointe may be introduced to girls who have reached a good basic level of ballet and when their bodies have reached an appropriate stage of physical development and strength. This will be at the discretion of the Ballet Tutors and parents will be advised in advance.
Contemporary dance
In Year 1 students will learn Graham-based technique. Martha Graham was one of the founders of modern / contemporary dance. As students progress other styles of contemporary dance will be introduced.
Creative dance & choreography
It is increasingly important for dancers to be able to create their own movement and for them to be comfortable, accomplished and confident in doing so. To this end students will receive weekly sessions in creative dance and choreography and may also work with choreographers to produce pieces for performance.
Health education
Health education sessions will include basic information about the body in relation to dance and how to look after the body, in order to learn about safe and healthy dance practice. A variety of specialist teachers will deliver this course.
Pilates
Pilates sessions will be used throughout the course to give students core strength and control. Students will need to practice exercises shown to them in the class at home between sessions.
Performing experience
Throughout the course students may be given opportunities to take part in performances to support their training. This will be used to teach elements of performance as well as to give a taste of the types of situations and experiences of a professional performer. Performances will be used as 'works in progress' during the student's training, rather than a demonstration of their finished abilities.
Exposure to companies and professionals
DanceEast is well connected with dance companies and professionals and will endeavour to offer opportunities for students to work with them at any possible opportunity. It is hoped that these opportunities will be inspiring and enjoyable.
