The DanceEast Academy is a new scheme that offers young people with exceptional potential in dance the opportunity to access high quality dance training as part of the Department For Children, Schools and Families Music and Dance Scheme.
The Academy will provide classes in ballet, contemporary dance, body
conditioning, fitness and dance health, as well as introducing students to choreography, dance history and appreciation, and other dance styles.
The scheme requires students to attend classes a minimum of one day at the weekend and once during the week as well as intensive weekend, Easter and summer holiday workshops. In certain circumstances it is possible to tailor a more individual programme for those who have exceptional potential but may have difficulty travelling to Ipswich during the week. The scheme is delivered outside of school time and every effort is made to keep a healthy balance between academic work and dance training.
Who is it for
Entrance onto the scheme is for young people aged between 10 and 14 from the East of England and no previous dance training is required. We are looking for enthusiastic, motivated young people with exceptional potential who have an
interest in pursuing dance as a career.
Where will it lead
The scheme will equip participants with the skills necessary to go on to further professional vocational dance training, usually at either age 16 or 18.
Most dance colleges and conservatoires offer degree and other further education courses alongside the practical training.
The training
Students will join the scheme for one year during which time they will be assessed on their progress and suitability for training at the Academy, which may continue until the age of 16 - 18. All students will receive an Individual Training Plan (ITP) to aid their development and highlight any personal needs.
