Academy/Previous/Next

A Centre for Advanced Training, for the East of England

How old do you have to be to apply to the DanceEast Academy?
We are actively recruiting students aged 10 - 14, however applications are accepted outside this age range in certain circumstances.

Does it matter if you haven’t had a lot of experience in dance?
We are looking for potential, so it is not necessary to have had lots of experience already, although some dance experience is preferable. We want to see if you can demonstrate the potential, dedication and enthusiasm to pursue a career in dance.

What about school?
The Academy is designed to fit around your school work, and in the first year you will only need to attend twice a week so you should still have plenty of time to do your homework.

What about the other dance classes that I already do?
It is important that students continue with a range of other activities, including other dance styles. You will however, need to be able to attend all the classes on the scheme, and need to be realistic about what you do.

How often will I attend classes?
To start with you will need to attend classes for about 8 hours a week; all day on Sundays and one evening during the week. In addition there will be week-long courses in the Easter and summer holidays. In some circumstances mid week classes may be taken closer to home.

I like dancing, but I am not sure yet whether I would like to pursue it as a
career. Should I apply?

If you don’t think you could commit the time and effort it takes, this is probably not the right course for you – but don’t stop dancing – this is one of many pathways into a career in dance.

What will I have to do at the audition?
The first audition will consist of practical dance sessions containing creative work, simple ballet technique and contemporary technique. Prospective students will then have an interview with members of the panel and after this their parent/guardian is invited to join them for a further interview. Applicants that are invited to return will take part in a second audition that takes the form of a three day summer school.

What is covered by the cost of the course?
The cost of the course includes provision at the Academy, home-based training according to the ITP, uniform, theatre trips and medical support. More information about the financial side of the scheme can be found on the Music
and Dance Scheme website: www.dcsf.gov.uk/mds and on the Costs and Funding page.

Does the course only last for a year?
Students are assessed continually throughout their time on the course and we hope to be able to support them right through to the time that they go on to further vocational training. However, if we or a student decide that the course is no longer right for them, the student is positively supported off the course.
