Frequently asked questions

Q. How old do I have to be to apply?
A. We are actively recruiting young people aged 10 - 15. Applications are accepted outside this age range in certain circumstances, but you will need to contact us to discuss your application.

Q. Does it matter if I haven't had a lot of experience in dance?
A.
It is not necessary to have had lots of training already, although some dance experience is preferable. We want to see if you can demonstrate the potential, dedication and enthusiasm to pursue a career in dance.

Q. What about school?
A.
The Academy is designed to fit around your school work and in the first year you will only need to attend classes twice a week.

Q. What about the other dance classes that I already do?
A.
It is important that students continue with a range of other activities. You will however need to be able to commit to attend all classes on the scheme.

Q. How often will I attend classes?
A.
To start with you will need to attend classes all day on Sundays and one evening during the week (dependent on age and level). In addition there will be short courses in the Easter and summer holidays. As you reach the age when you start to audition for full-time training your hours may increase. Book your place at an Open Day to find out more

Q. I like dancing, but I am not sure whether I would like to pursue it as a career: should I still apply?
A.
If you don't think you could commit the time and effort it takes, this is probably not the right course for you - but don't stop dancing - this is one of many pathways into a career in dance. AcademyKidz is an introductory level dance course for children aged 9-13 with little or no dance experience.

Q. What will I have to do at the audition?
A.
The first audition will consist of practical dance sessions containing creative work, contemporary and simple ballet technique. Applicants are placed in a class with people of a similar age and level of experience. At Stage 2 applicants will have a short interview with a member of the panel, and their parent/guardian is also asked to join them.

Q. What is covered by the cost of the course?
A.
The cost of the course includes provision at the Academy, mid-week training according to the Individual Training Plan (ITP), uniform, theatre trips and medical support. In addition students may be offered the opportunity to take part in projects with the National Dance CATs and recieve ongoing advice and career guidance.

Q. Does the course only last for a year?
A.
Students are assessed continually throughout their time on the course and we hope to be able to support them right through to the time that they go on to further vocational training. However, if the Academy team feels that that the course is no longer right for a student, they are positively supported off the course and encouraged to continue with other dance activities.
