Basic facts

What we offer
The DanceEast Academy offers young people with exceptional potential in dance the opportunity to access high quality dance training as part of the Department for Children, Schools and Families Music and Dance Scheme.

The Academy provides classes in ballet, contemporary dance, body conditioning, fitness and dance health, as well as introducing students to choreography, dance history and appreciation, and other dance styles. This combination of classes is intended to give students a strong basic grounding in technique and creativity, to enable them to apply to a range of vocational schools with a broad set of skills, relevant to the current dance industry.

The scheme requires students to attend classes each Sunday during term time at the DanceHouse and at least once during the week in either Ipswich, Norwich or Cambridge. All students also take part in intensive weekend, Easter and summer holiday workshops. In certain circumstances it is possible to tailor a more individual programme for those who may have difficulty travelling to one of the
Academy classes during the week. The scheme is delivered outside of school time and every effort is made to encourage students to keep a healthy balance between academic work and dance training.

Who is it for

Entrance onto the scheme is for young people aged between 10 and 15 from the East of England and no previous dance training is required, although experienced dancers are also welcome to apply. We are looking for enthusiastic, motivated young people with exceptional potential who have an interest in pursuing dance as a career.

Where will it lead
The scheme will equip participants with the skills necessary to go on to further professional vocational dance training, usually at either age 16 or 18. Most dance colleges and conservatoires offer degree and other further education courses alongside the practical training. Careers guidance and advice is on offer throughout the course.

The training
Students will join the scheme for one year during which time they will be assessed on their progress and suitability for training at the Academy, which may then continue until the age of 16 - 18. All students will receive an Individual Training Plan (ITP) to aid their development and highlight personal goals and needs.
