Support for Artists

DanceEast promotes dance excellence, risk-taking, innovation and creativity. Supporting individual artists and dance companies at various stages in their careers is a key element of DanceEast's work. Training, research and development, commissioning and producing new work and support are offered through a range of programmes that reach out regionally, nationally and internationally.

DanceEast supports the work of leading and emerging dance companies and artists by enabling regular training and professional development. In 2007 DanceEast played a key role in commissioning and supporting the creation of new work by Maresa von Stockert, Darren Johnston, Wayne McGregor|Random Dance, Rafael Bonachela and Jean Abreu as well as presenting work by a range of choreographic talent, including Isobel Cohen, Matthias Sperling and Heather Eddington., among others.

Associate Companies included Bonachela Dance and Wayne McGregor|Random Dance and Associate Artist Maresa von Stockert.

Residencies
Residencies at the Wolsey Studio and Northgate Arts Centre in Ipswich offer time out to artists to experiment and develop new work in non-pressurised studio environments. There are often opportunities for the work to be shown to invited audiences and the general public and open classes for regional artists.

Professional Development
Regional artists and practitioners are supported through an on-going professional development programme that offers workshops with leading dance artists and companies; contemporary and ballet technique classes.

In 2007, DanceEast hosted a week-long residency for dance artists led by Cuban dancers/choreographers Georges Cespedes and Julio Cesar.

Platform East
Each Autumn, DanceEast offers regional dance artists an opportunity to showcase their work in Platform East at the Wolsey Studio.

Escalator
DanceEast is a partner in Escalator, which is supporting the development of dance artists working in the East of England. This is a new Arts Council England, East initiative which aims to find, support and invest in artists and covers all areas of the performing arts, enabling them to realise their potential in producing high quality professional work.

Escalator supports a broad range of artists at different stages in their careers, providing coaching, training & development, touring opportunities and investment as well as joint promotion and networking opportunities. Escalator is run by a team of regional arts organisations, producers, artists and Arts Council England, East.

Rural Retreats
Rural Retreats offer time out to existing and future artistic directors and dance leaders in rural settings to grapple with key issues facing the world of dance. To date, DanceEast has hosted four Rural Retreats looking at the future of the art form in the 21st Century. These have been the first and largest ever gatherings of artistic directors from around the globe. In 2008, DanceEast is launching an intenraiotnal placement scheme with dance companies and organizations around the globe for some of the 27 participants in the 2008 Retreat for future leaders.
