BP Summer Big Screen

Live ballet on big screens around the UK from the Royal Opera House - Absolutely Free

www.roh.org.uk/bpbigscreens

The Royal Opera House is delighted to announce that Ipswich will host a live screening of The Royal Ballet’s Romeo and Juliet in Christchurch Park on Sunday June 1 at 3pm as part of this summer’s free BP Summer Big Screens.

Ipswich residents can watch the world-class performance absolutely free on a big screen in Christchurch Park as it is beamed live from the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.

The Royal Ballet’s production of Romeo and Juliet, which tells the story of Shakespeare’s enduring tragedy, has become one of the most popular works in the Company’s repertory. This Sunday afternoon screening has been chosen especially to allow families to enjoy one of the most memorable and emotive scores in history.  Prokofiev’s music will sweep you off your feet, filling you with the passion and heartbreak of the star-crossed lovers. Romeo and Juliet, which begins this year’s BP Summer Big Screens programme will also be screened to Bradford, Hull, Leeds, Manchester, Rotherham, Derby, Trafalgar Square and Canary Wharf in London, Ipswich and Sunbury.

The BP Summer Big Screen relays are a great opportunity for people to get together, bring a picnic and enjoy wonderful ballet and opera for free – the events have continued to grow in popularity regardless of the UK’s notorious summer weather!

Birmingham, Bradford, Hull, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Rotherham and Derby will again have free live screenings through this ongoing collaboration between the ROH, BP and the BBC, as will Trafalgar Square and Canary Wharf in London, Duthie Park in Aberdeen, Ipswich, Sunbury and the Botanic Gardens, Belfast.  The new venues for 2008 will be the BBC Screen in Swindon and Lakeside, Thurrock.

BP has supported the Big Screen live relays of opera and ballet performances direct from Covent Garden since 2000. The generous ongoing support of BP has allowed ROH to reach as many people as possible around the country with live performances, allowing them to experience the very best of opera and ballet in their home town, for free.  The Royal Opera House has screened performances in the Covent Garden Piazza since 1987.
