Guest speakers and teachers announced for 1st LAB launching National Centre for Choreography

This week sees the start of the first Lab at the National Centre for Choreography at the Jerwood DanceHouse in Ipswich. The four choreographers, Sagi Gross, Rosie Kay, Ash Mukherjee and James Streeter were selected by a steering group of dance professionals were chosen from 35 applications from around the globe.

Internationally acclaimed director and choreographer Jonathan Lunn will be artistically leading along with guest teachers Nina Goldman and Rachel Krische who will be leading classes over the 2 week period.  Kathryn Hunter, Huntley Muir and Arthur Pita will be leading sessions focusing on narrative and storytelling through dance. This is a first for DanceEast which promises to develop a better understanding of narrative and story telling in dance and see the emergence of new work from the participating choreographers.

Ten professional dancers will be on hand for the duration of the LAB including 3 from England National Ballet and other freelance dancers -  Carly Best, Barry Drummond, Victor Fung, Nick Lawson, Stephanie McMann, Dominic Mitchell-Bennett, Nancy Osbadalston, Kostas Papamatthaiakis, Laurretta Summerscales, Shahla Tarrant Katerina Toumpa and Lewis Wilkins.

DanceEast’s Artistic Director & Chief Executive, Assis Carreiro, has worked to develop the National Centre for Choreography: After many years in the planning, I am thrilled to see our 1st Lab offering a  unique, indepth research and development time for choreographers being realised under the Artistic Direction of Jonathan Lunn. Four choreographers from diverse backgrounds are coming together with 10 dancers who are new to them to all open themselves to very new and challenging experiences in a hothouse environment.

‘This Choreographic LAB is aptly named, as it provides a rare opportunity for a dynamic group of up and coming choreographers to benefit from what a 'real' laboratory has to offer. It is a place for detailed research, experimentation and analysis, a place for mistakes and masterpieces, even a place where new cultures grow.’ Jonathan Lunn

This exciting new initiative will fill a much needed gap in international choreographic development. The National Centre for Choreography heralds a strategic move for DanceEast, offering the UK’s only research and development for experienced choreographers to explore new areas and experiment freely with other artists without the pressures of producing a final product.

The first three LABs are generously supported by Arts Council England and The Linbury Trust. English National Ballet will be supporting the National Centre for Choreography by providing dancers for each of the LABs.
