Content Supported by Suffolk County Council Advisory Teacher for Dance, Michael Platt the pack is written by Elaine Elliott from All Saints CEVAP School, Laxfield and is perfect for Suffolk schools. The work is based on a year on an arable farm, and the ten easy to use themes of work have been designed for teachers, written with the National Curriculum guidelines in mind. It has all the tools you need to build an effective and interesting dance class, including warm ups, observations points, extension ideas, cool downs and possible learning outcomes.

The Inspiration Soil Dances is ideal to help young people examine and connect with their environment and is especially applicable in rural areas. The film project was based on farms and factories in Suffolk using sites such as Muntons Malt in Stowmarket and the Museum of East Anglian Life. Working with co-directors Michael Platt and Peter Anderson, 127 performers - school children and community groups - appear in the film, which explores the heritage and agriculture of the Suffolk landscape.

The young people in the film experimented with the stimuli used in the workbook to create the movement that appears in the film. Themes The easy to follow themes of work are packed with ideas for up to a year’s work, and gives extension ideas to help you tailor the work to the needs of your group, exploring a different aspect of the farming year in each section. Soil Dances DVD The hard backed workbook is accompanied by Soil Dances DVD. ‘’a stunning work of art, reflecting all that is good in community dance and the filming of dance’’ Ann Ward, Laban Guild.

The film can be enjoyed alone but can also be used to illustrate teaching points that are highlighted in the text, with time-coded reference points to help the children see the ideas from the lesson in action. Music CD Also included is a ten track CD of original music by Ian David Smith, taken from the soundtrack from the film. Recommendations of suitable tracks to use with each theme are included in the workbook, completing the set of resources you will need to plan your lesson.

We hope that you are able to enjoy and learn from this resource pack and that it will be used to inspire young people to create and experiment with dance and the different landscapes and traditions that surround them. This handbook is the outcome of a process of challenge, experimentation and learning shared during a project of the same title and hopes to be a companion to all those who teach dance, whatever the context or style. It is intended to offer support, inspiration, guidance, challenge and reassurance and will offer insight into how other dance practitioners' work. Written and compiled by Sue Akroyd.
