Ballet Barre | Live on Zoom


Ballet Barre is a strength and conditioning class – it’s great for anyone who is new to ballet. This class will strengthen your muscles to improve your technique.

The class begins with a high energy warm up before moving on to exercises at the barre, starting with pliés. Towards the end of the class, you’ll move away from the barre and practise centre exercises – finishing with a good stretch. Sometimes, the class will begin with floor barre – which works as a foundation for setting up technique and engaging the right muscles!

If you join us for Ballet Barre you can expect to engage your whole body, including your mind which will work hard to learn exercises and develop co-ordination. You’ll improve your posture, flexibility and muscle strength.

All levels of experience will enjoy this class, whether you’ve danced before or not. We work through every exercise as though it’s the first time for everyone.

“When people come to me and say “It’s my first time here” I always say work to the best of your ability and how your body is feeling that day. I always encourage people to keep going and not give up if they are struggling with an exercise. We are all in the same boat and my body aches teaching it just as much as the those joining in! You should wear anything that you feel comfortable to move in and that is non-restrictive e.g. leggings or workout gear. Some of our class attenders like to come in tights and a leotard, while others are more comfortable wearing a t-shirt and gym leggings. Don’t worry if you don’t have ballet shoes – you can dance with bare feet!

Make sure you have water to hand, it’s important to stay hydrated. You’ll also need a secure surface to use as your barre at home for example, your kitchen counter or a chair.

We’ll send you the Zoom link for your class 1 hour before via email, and you’ll be able to join the class up to 15 minutes early. Before you take part in a class, please make sure you read our Safe Practice at Home Checklist, click here to download now.

Meet the Tutor
Laura Bryars

Laura started her professional dance training on the CAT at the Northern School of Contemporary dance. After 3 years of intense training, she moved to London to continue her dance and musical theatre training at the Urdang Academy. After graduating in 2012, Laura has worked professionally across the country, working with dance companies ( Rambert, Phoenix dance Theatre), musicals (the fix, Billy Liar, panto) and went on a UK tour with the John Godber Theatre company with “Teechers”. Laura has participated in TV adverts and has recently began teaching at DanceEast. Laura was a part of Matthew Bourne's New Adventures 2019/20 cohort, and runs a buggy bootcamp for mums in her local area in addition to teaching adult ballet in her local Community, and isa dance associate for Ipswich Town Football Club community trust.
