WHAT TO EXPECT
Contemporary is a technique-based class with most of the movement being release based. Release is a contemporary technique that uses the breath to initiate movement and helps to find a sense of flow through the movement.
The class begins with an easy warm up to get your body ready to move, followed by a series of phrases and exercises that focus on different parts of the body. These phrases and exercises will be used to create a final, longer sequence that will incorporate the skills learnt during the class.
If you join us for a contemporary class, you can expect to improve your stamina, strength, and flexibility whilst developing your technique. Your confidence will also improve, helped by building on phrases each week, and you may feel like you have a more focussed mind after a class.
IS THIS CLASS FOR YOU?
This is an open class, meaning that it’s suitable for all abilities; from those just starting out in dance or looking for a new hobby, to those in dance training. There will be options for adapted movements so you can tailor the class to best suit your personal ability.
All movement phrases and exercises will be taught over several weeks, giving you the chance to develop and improve each week.
“Try and keep an open mind, and don’t be worried about getting something wrong! Try at least two classes before you decide whether you liked it or not as your first class can sometimes feel a bit strange if you’re not used to the movement – but you are more likely to settle in and feel comfortable with the movement after a few classes. Give yourself time, and don’t be afraid to ask questions!”– Hayley Lemon, Contemporary Tutor
HOW TO PREPARE FOR YOUR CLASS
You should wear anything that you feel comfortable to move in and that is non-restrictive e.g. leggings, tracksuit bottoms or workout gear. It’s best if you dance bare foot, but this will depend on the space you will be dancing in, so you may prefer to wear socks or dance shoes such as ballet or jazz shoes.
Make sure you have water to hand, it’s important to stay hydrated.
We’ll send you the Zoom link for your class 1 hour before via email, and you’ll be able to join the class up to 15 minutes early. Before you take part in a class, please make sure you read our Safe Practice at Home Checklist, click here to download now.
