Applications are now open for U. Dance East 2021, presented in partnership between DanceEast and the University of Bedfordshire, taking place on Saturday 27 March 2021.

U. Dance is a national celebration of performance by young people aged 11 – 19 years, and up to 25 years for young people with disabilities. The Regional Platforms are part of the U. Dance programme, which is delivered in partnership with One Dance UK.

The Eastern Region will host a sensational online showcase of dance from the finest youth dance groups, companies and schools. This day of activities, workshops and digital interaction will provide an opportunity for the region’s finest dance groups to come together and celebrate dance.
One Dance UK and U. Dance welcome dancers performing any style or genre and actively encourages inclusive groups to apply to dance at the festival – U. Dance is for everyone! Group leaders should fill in an application form which is available here.

Due to Covid-19 Restrictions, this year’s sole application route will be U. Dance on Screen. U. Dance on Screen has three strands:

  1. Submit a full piece for screening as a performance – this can be a digitally-created Dance Film made within current lockdown restrictions, or a previous recording of a performance that took place in person within the past 12 months.
  2. Submit snippets of a piece, or excerpts from your digital explorations/online rehearsals from across the past year of digital connection, to be compiled with others’ clips into a U. Dance Celebration Video.
  3. No submission of recorded work, but expression of interest in attending free workshops and inclusive events taking place live on 27 March through our digital event

Please note:

For those applicants who have chosen to submit a full piece for screening, these applications will be considered by a panel of industry experts who will shortlist groups to perform at each Platform. We will contact groups in early March 2021 to inform them whether their application for screening at one of the Regional Platforms has been successful. Two groups per event will then be chosen to be put forward to One Dance UK by an independent panel and ultimately one group will be selected to represent the Eastern region at U. Dance national digital festival, which will take place from 6 – 8 August 2021.

U.Dance is a fantastic experience. It is a wonderful celebration of young talent, and it also provides a chance for young dancers to connect, to take part in workshops and to learn more about the dance sector. Above all, it allows them to showcase their love of dance! This digital platform will be every bit as interactive, exciting and engaging as previous live events have been. We are working hard behind the scenes to put together the most exciting Regional Platform yet!

Before you apply, we would highly recommend you read the guidance notes supplied by One Dance UK. We want everyone to take part in U.Dance Digital 2021 in a safe and enjoyable environment, and participants must agree to abide by the following guidelines and instructions.

With U.Dance Regional Platforms taking place digitally in 2021, we want you to be equipped to best capture the talent and creativity of your piece.
To support groups with their digital applications, we encourage you to watch the below Upskilling Webinars with dance film experts free of charge. These were filmed in December 2020 with a particular focus on dance for children and young people:
