MAKERSPACE

During the summer and winter months, when our programmed activities pause, the Jerwood DanceHouse embraces a peaceful and quiet atmosphere. During this rare period in our calendar when we are free of other commitments, we can support dance artists with studio space more than any other point in the year. DanceEast uses this opportunity to host Makerspace.

Makerspace is open to all dance artists at any career stage, offering space and freedom to work on projects, research new ideas, rehearse, or simply be creative with no required outcomes.

HOW TO APPLY

Applications for Summer Makerspace 2025 shall open in June, inviting artists into our studios at the end of August.

Applications for Makerspace are advertised through an open call, requesting artists to complete an application through our website.

We are committed to supporting a diverse community of artists and welcome applications from artists working across the region in various dance styles. While our priority is to support artists based in the East of England, the opportunity is open to all.

Please note that new applications will be given priority over artists who have previously participated in the programme as part of our commitment to providing equal opportunities.

MAKERSPACE TERMS AND CONDITIONS

Applicants who are offered studio space as part of Makerspace are required to complete an evaluation form as a gesture of thanks to DanceEast.

Makerspace includes:

  • Hands-off Studio Time: A dedicated space to explore, rehearse, and move freely without pressure.
  • Warm Welcome: Enjoy the friendly support of our Box Office team in an accessible and welcoming building.
  • Studio Availability: Up to 1 week of studio time (Monday – Friday, 9am – 5pm) per artist or company.
  • Scenic Breaks: Take advantage of beautiful walks along the sunny Ipswich Waterfront – we’ll even share tips on the best ice cream spots!

Makerspace does not include:

  • Pressure: There is no expectation to present a finished piece or achieve an outcome. Artists are encouraged to use the space for their own creative needs and exploration.
  • Chargeable Activities: The space cannot be used for fee-based classes or chargeable events.
  • Staff and Technical Support: As this is a quieter period for DanceEast, our team may be on holiday. Staff and technical support are not available.
  • Booking Transfers: Studio time cannot be rescheduled or transferred to a later date.
  • Cash Funding: Financial support is not available.
  • An Employment Contract: This offer is not a paid residency or employment opportunity funded by DanceEast.

We look forward to welcoming an array of artists to the Jerwood DanceHouse for our Summer Makerspace Programme, providing a safe space to create, explore and have fun!

If you have any questions about Makerspace, please contact Katie Byford, Programme Coordinator, on Katie.Byford@danceeast.co.uk or 01473 235581 (Monday – Friday, 9.00am – 5.00pm).
