DANCEEAST CALL OUT FOR NEW ASSOCIATE ARTISTS; APPLICATIONS OPEN

15 Dec 2017

Having established a reputation for working across the UK and internationally with a range of different companies and partners, DanceEast are pleased to announce an open call out for new Associate Artists. The call out is for up to three Associate Artists and one Junior Associate to collaborate closely with from April 2018 until April 2020.

DanceEast are keen to hear expressions of interest from artists who feel they can both contribute and benefit from a relationship with the organisation.

It is expected that Associate Artists will have a significant track record, for example, a minimum of five years professional experience. A Junior Associate will have graduated in the last three years and be looking to progress their career as a dancemaker. Applications are welcomed from dance artists based in the East and people with diverse backgrounds, including BAME artists and those with and without disabilities.

The scheme will be individually tailored to the needs of each artist and includes a bursary, studio space, use of DanceEast’s studio theatre and opportunities to present work in the Jerwood DanceHouse and in the wider artistic programme. There will be opportunities to share research and receive feedback along with advice and guidance from the DanceEast team. Artists will have a significant artistic presence at the Jerwood DanceHouse, engaging with all departments including the Creative Team to collaborate, devise and test ideas.

Former Associate Artists at DanceEast have included Alexander Whitley, Anna Williams, Rosemary Lee, James Cousins as well as Tom Hobden and Kate Flurrie. During his time as an Associate Artist, Alexander Whitley has previewed several new pieces of work in the Jerwood DanceHouse, including Pattern Recognition and current touring production 8 Minutes.

Choreographer Alexander Whitley says about the scheme:

It was hard to anticipate what all of the benefits of the program would be at the beginning, but the warmth and trust from audiences and the community around DanceEast is what I feel I will take away from it most.”

In her role as Associate Artist, renowned choreographer Rosemary Lee mentored regional dance artists working closely to support them as they completed large-scale community performances. Local artists Tom Hobden and Kate Flurrie who comprise UNIT, a multi-disciplinary dance company which brings innovative contemporary dance to the stage and screen using a unique blend of extraordinary performers, premiered the company’s first full length work 20 Questions at the DanceHouse in July 2017. Each of the Associate Artists spent time working with and creating choreography for students from the DanceEast Centre for Advanced Training.
