We’re pleased to announce that Pemberton and Hague have been awarded a funded residency here at DanceEast in Ipswich through Round 8 of Lab:time². Pemberton and Hague hope to explore the world of eccentric dance and silent film in order to develop a repertoire of movement that will enhance their circus work.
About the project: Our project is to immerse ourselves into world of eccentric dance to develop a repertoire of movement that will enhance the richness and depth of our circus work, enabling us to reach our goal – to produce a two- man circus and physical theatre show at The Soho Theatre. Stewart Pemberton and Sam Hague have just recently devised and performed a show called:Two Man Ten Minute Circus – directed by Jeremy Stockwell.
Both artists are skilled in juggling, acrobatics, tap dance, swing dance, clown and physical theatre and both have extensive solo circus careers spanning 15 years including companies such as English National Ballet, Glyndebourne Opera, as well as smaller devised work like ‘The Arrival’ and ‘Rhythm Town’ by Stewarts company Juggling On Tap.
Pemberton & Hague have been supported by DanceEast through the National Centre for Circus Arts’s Lab:time² programme, with funding from the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation.

About Lab:time: Lab:time is our programme for innovation and experimentation in the Circus Arts, funded by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation. Through Lab:time individual artists and companies are able to secure research and development time in the Creation Studio at the National Centre for Circus Arts, as well as small but significant amounts of seed funding to support the first stages of exploration.
By offering artists the means to explore their ideas at the very beginning of the creative process it is our aim to generate a critical mass of creative development that will, over time, generate an increase in the quality and quantity of new circus-based performance across the UK.
Although the space we offer is at the National Centre in London, we welcome applications for Lab:time Funding from artists across the UK.
About Lab:time²: Lab:time² is also supported by the Esmeé Fairbairn Foundation, offers a more significant grant to support the next stage of development. Lab:time² takes projects that are viable and would benefit from a partnership with a venue to provide further Research and Development and the possibility of presenting it as work in progress to an audience.
We have funding for ten Lab:time² residencies at venues across the UK. Each residency is tailored to the venue providing a mutually beneficial partnership.
