This is the second Double Bill of the season, our first can be found here. This evening consists of male solos – both new to DanceEast. Lanre Malaolu first came onto our radar last year and we were blown away by the quality of his work, his brilliance and his energy.
Mohamed Toukabri is a Brussels based artist, we first saw The Upside Down Man (The Son of the Road) at a festival in Dusseldorf. We were desperate to bring Mohamed to the UK, so joined forces with Shubbak Festival to secure a small UK tour. After DanceEast the work will be travelling to Pavillion Dance in Bournemouth, The Lowry in Manchester and London’s Southbank Centre.
We hope you’ll be as excited as we are about these brilliant new artists and would love to hear your thoughts about our new Double Bill format.
Lanre Malalou | Elephant in the Room
Fusing physical theatre, hip hop dance and spoken word, Elephant in The Room is an explosive solo that explores the mental health crisis and the phenomenon of toxic masculinity. This semiautobiographical work, created and performed by Lanre Malaolu, takes a sharp sideways look at the insidious stigma around mental health issues, asking how race, class and culture can affect the way we choose to address them. And what happens when we don’t…
Elephant in the Room was commissioned by Camden People’s Theatre and DanceEast. CPT’s Home Run commissioning programme is funded by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation. The development of this work has been supported by Arts Council England, Battersea Arts Centre, Camden People’s Theatre, Talawa Theatre Company, The WellcomeTrust, MGCfutures, The Place and Laban Theatre.
