This is the second Double Bill of the season, our first can be found here. This evening consists of male solos – both new to DanceEast. Lanre Malaolu first came onto our radar last year and we were blown away by the quality of his work, his brilliance and his energy.

Mohamed Toukabri is a Brussels based artist, we first saw The Upside Down Man (The Son of the Road) at a festival in Dusseldorf. We were desperate to bring Mohamed to the UK, so joined forces with Shubbak Festival to secure a small UK tour. After DanceEast the work will be travelling to Pavillion Dance in Bournemouth, The Lowry in Manchester and London’s Southbank Centre.

We hope you’ll be as excited as we are about these brilliant new artists and would love to hear your thoughts about our new Double Bill format.

Come along to the whole evening for £10 (Both performances must be added to your basket to receive the £10 ticket offer. Any queries please call our box office on 01473 295230)

Mohamed Toukabri | The Upside Down Man

Mohamed Toukabri’s autobiographical solo delves deeply into the experience of a young man finding himself in dance and in Europe. From discovering street dance as a 12-year old in front of the railway station, to his 10 years of performing with renowned companies like Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, and Jan Lauwers. His movements explore a personal yet universal migrant experience. Subtle video projections from his family home, stories of casual racism and lightly humoured observations blend into a richly textured experience of being in-between two countries, two cultures and two traditions.

The Upside Down Man is part of Shubbak 2019. Presented with additional support from Qatar Foundation International, Arts Council England, British Council, Bagri Foundation and A.M.Qattan Foundation.
