Are you a young person considering a career in dance? Are you interested in learning more about the possibilities and pathways? Join us for this one-hour online session to hear from industry professionals and get valuable insights about starting a career in dance.

This event is part of the Discover Creative Careers Week 2024, showing young people what it’s really like to work in the dance sector.

 

MEET THE CAREERS PANEL:

CATHY WALLER

Cathy is an Associate Artist

Cathy is an award winning Choreographer and Movement Director, working for over a decade in contemporary dance and theatre. After training at LABAN, Cathy went on to choreograph for multiple organisations (BBC, Tate Modern, Wembley Arena, Breakin’ Convention, Barbican) before founding Cathy Waller Company in 2012. With her company, Cathy has choreographer and directed contemporary dance works that have toured nationally on stages such as Sadler’s Wells, Stratford Circus, West End Live, National Theatre and Greenwich and Docklands International Festival. As a Movement Director for theatre and film, most notable credits include: Missing Julie (Theatre Clwyd, Kaite O’Reilly), The Solid Life of Sugar Water (Graeae, Theatre Royal Plymouth, National Theatre), Architecture of Anatomy (Kristina Walsh, Sarabande: The Lee Alexander McQueen Foundation) and ba(ME) (Julie Ann Minaai, Michael Garett).

As a consultant, Cathy works with independent artists and arts organisations to support growth in strategy, finance, fundraising and better access for artists and audiences. During the Covid-19 pandemic, Cathy worked with over 20 non-disabled and disabled artists and 5 arts organisations to support their financial recovery and stabilisation, sourcing over £1,000,000 from various funding bodies across the UK.

Cathy became disabled in late 2012, and works actively to improve and advocate for disabled artists and audiences, for a more accessible participation and enjoyment for everything within the Arts and Culture sector.

JOHN ROBINSON

: John is a CAT Alumni

John began dancing at an early age, and was part of the Royal Ballet Mid Associate Programme for 2 years and the DanceEast Centre of Advanced Training for 6 years. He then went on to attend Northern School of Contemporary Dance, graduating with a first class degree.

Following this John went on to complete a masters degree during which he was the apprentice for 2Faced Dance Company, touring in their triple bill ‘Everything [but the girl]’, performing works by Tamsin Fitzgerald and Fleur Darkin across the UK.

Upon completing his masters degree, John worked with Sababa Company, Roisin Whelan Dance and Vinicius Salles.

John is currently a company dancer for 2Faced Dance Company performing in: 7.0, The Qualies, The Box of Delights, POWER, Last Orders, Where All Paths Lead and Lungs of Our City.

JAMES MULLER

James is a CAT Ballet Tutor

Raised in Ipswich, James started dancing at the Linda Shipton school of Dance and went on to train full-time at the Royal Ballet School, graduating from Central School of Ballet in 2006 with a BA (hons) degree in Professional Dance. After joining Northern Ballet that same year he went on to work with Peter Schaufuss Ballet in Denmark and Theatre Ulm in Germany.

In 2013 James returned to the UK to join Richard Alston Dance Company (RADC). Since then he has toured extensively in Europe and the USA performing in a wide variety of work by Alston and associate choreographer Martin Lawrance. In 2019 he also performed the role of interim Rehearsal Director for RADC.

James is currently a lecturer in Cunningham Technique at Middlesex University and also teaches regularly at The Place for Dance in London alongside his role as CAT tutor at DanceEast. He has also served as a board member for ‘Bodies in Action’ Dance company since 2021, contributing to their creative output.

In 2017, James created ‘Symbiotic’ for the Resolution Dance festival and since 2018 has choreographed numerous works for ‘Multiphonic Arts’ performances at the Asylum Chapel in Peckham.

PARIS CROSSLEY

Paris is an Associate Artist

Paris Crossley is a movement artist specialising in Popping. Her training in a variety of street-dance styles, contemporary dance and martial arts has made her a valuable asset to the UK arts community and internationally, adopting positions such as the performer, assistant choreographer, choreographer, movement and creative director. Her professionalism has made her an associate artist with DanceEast since 2022.

Paris’ work extends beyond the competition realm and into theatre and commercial scenes where she has worked with various companies some of which include Russell Maliphant, Boy Blue, House of Absolute, Cirque Bijou, Kadir ’Amigo’ Memis and more, as well as artists such as Rita Ora, Dua Lipa, Benjamin Clementine and more.
