Emotive. Physical. Transformative.
Through a double bill of film and live dance, You & Us offers a powerful reflection on invisibility, revealing stories usually kept out of sight and placing them centre stage. Cathy Waller, former DanceEast Associate Artist, is delighted to present You & Us tonight as part of a UK tour.
The show begins with her award-winning film You are also Us, filmed using drones in striking locations across Dorset and fresh from international touring success. A new live work follows after a brief pause, and the evening concludes with a post-show discussion featuring Cathy and a member of the company.
The work asks why we hide parts of ourselves to fit in, and what it might mean to be fully seen. What began with Cathy’s personal experience of invisible disability grew into a collaboration with hundreds of people, unravelling stories that touch on identity, culture and belonging. The work features an original score by MOBO Award-winning composer Lewis Wright.
In the foyer, Unseen | Unmasked, a photographic exhibition by The1Harris, continues the conversation, alongside a short film created with local communities at The Hive, Ipswich.
LIVE DANCE
FILM
You are Also Us is a short dance film directed by Cathy Waller and performed by 15 dancers. It was filmed using ground-breaking drone technology in stunning National Trust locations around Dorset. The film has been shown in film festivals internationally, picking up awards and honourable mentions.

EXHIBITION

The Hive project
Cathy Waller has been visiting The Hive, a grassroots community interest company based in Ipswich, for the last couple of weeks alongside a filmmaker, facilitating conversations about “home”, linking in with the themes of invisibility and identity in Cathy’s You & Us double bill. The short film will capture these conversations and capture the people at the heart of The Hive, reflecting who they are as an organisation. The film will be shown on loop on the big screen in DanceEast’s foyer next Friday as part of Cathy’s exhibition, alongside striking photography by The1Harris.
