HEALTHY YOUNG DANCERS | GUIDANCE NETWORK ADVOCATE TRAINING

In partnership with the DanceEast Centre for Advanced Training (CAT) and the GuiDANCE Network.

This half-day workshop and training event will provide dance teachers with an opportunity to learn about the latest developments and best practice in supporting healthy development and promoting health and wellbeing for children and young people in dance, with a specific focus on adolescence. This training is specifically designed to prepare dance teachers to share learning with peers – and to become advocates for the GuiDANCE Network and the work of DanceEast. Pre-requisites for attending include a basic understanding of the topic of growth and development (either through experience or previous training).

 

Suitable for group leaders, dance teachers, private ballet schools, and anyone else who works with young dancers.

The session will be led by Dr Siobhan Mitchell (University of Exeter) and Imogen Knight.

  • The training will be focused on how you can apply this knowledge in your teaching practice
  • You will be provided with a advocate training pack which includes resources to take away and use
  • After attending the follow up session, you will be provided with a CPD certificate

The training includes the in-person session (on Thursday 1 February 2024) plus an online follow up session on zoom on Thursday 25 April 2024, 10am-11am. This follow up session will provide an opportunity to reflect on how you have applied the work in your own practice and a space to share successes, challenges, and solutions. If you are unable to make the follow up session, there is an alternative date you are abel to attend.

You will be come a member the GuiDANCE Network,and membership is free.


Additional Informaiton:

This workshop will share findings from the Growing Up in Dance (GuiDANCE) project and the best practice guidelines. You will be provided up to date knowledge on core areas in psychological and physical growth and development. The session will involve a combination of lecture, discussion and interactive tasks.
You will also find recieve information about DanceEast and the DanceEast Centre for Advanced Training (CAT) and how we can work together to support young dancers in the region.

Schedule:

  • 9.30am-10am, Arrival
  • 10am-10.20am, Introduction to GuiDANCE project and Network/what does it mean to be an advocate/how the DanceEast CAT supports young dancers and teachers in the region.
  • 10.20am-11.20am, Review of the adolescent dancer
  • 11.20am-12.15pm, Translation – Implementing best practice with adolescent dancers
  • 12.15pm-1pm, Breakout groups/discussion
  • 1pm, Session close

 

ABOUT SIOBHAN MITCHELL

I trained as a dancer before going on to complete a BA Hons in Dance Studies at the University of Roehampton, an MSc in Dance Science at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance and an MRes in Health and Wellbeing at the University of Bath. Awarded a full ESRC studentship in 2014, I completed my PhD at the University of Bath exploring growth and maturation in the context of dance, specifically psychosocial and physical implications of differing maturing timing in adolescent dancers.

Alongside my work as part of the Adolescent Dancer, I work as a research fellow in child and adolescent health. I am passionate about providing education about adolescence and how we can support young people in dance.
